Jupiter class are studying Sculpture in art this half term. To support and enhance their learning the children and teachers visited the Laing Art Gallery in Newcastle on Wednesday 7th October. On the way to the gallery they were able to stop and explore the wonderful local sculpture – The Angel of the North. Everyone was amazed at the size of this wonderful piece of art, it was huge! The children were able to feel the metal structure and see the detail of it. It was very impressive.
On arrival at the Laing Art Gallery, the children walked around the many rooms and looked at all of the wonderful paintings and sculptures. Together they shared and discussed their thoughts and opinions on the many art works on display.
Next, the children took part in a clay sculpture workshop. This was great fun! The watched her as she demonstrated techniques for sculpting with clay. They then used the techniques that they had been shown to make superb clay sculptures of their own.
As you can see from the photographs the day was an excellent learning experience for all. The children’s’ behaviour was impeccable, the teacher at the gallery commented on how well behaved and involved they all were. Well done Jupiter class.
