Welcome to our Foundation Stage
Our Nursery and Reception children are taught alongside each other in our Foundation Stage unit. Our children love to get out and about. Follow the links below to find out what they’ve been up too.
Spring 1 2020
This half term our topic is Traditional Tales. We will begin the term by reading ‘The Jolly Postman.’ and spotting all the familiar characters that he is delivering post to. We will then spend a week focusing on each character’s story including familiar tales such as Goldilocks and the Three Bears, Jack and the Bean Stalk and Little Red Riding Hood. We will have lots of discussion about the plot, the characters and the morals within each tale. There will be lots of exciting activities for us to get busy including porridge making, growing our own beanstalk and planning a ball for Cinderella!
Autumn 2 2019
This half term our topic is ‘Where does the day go at night?’. Beginning with the story ‘Where does Thursday go?’, we will be learning all about night and day and what makes them different. We will find out about nocturnal animals, space and space travel, as well as day and night time routines. We will also explore light and dark by working with torches and observe our shadows and how they change throughout the day. Towards the end of term, we will also be carrying out lots of lovely Christmas activities.
Summer 2 2019
This half term we are thinking about who are our superheroes. We will read a range of stories about different superheroes and discuss which is our favourite. We will then look at some people in our community who help us such as firefighters, police and dentists etc we will enjoy pretending to take on the roles of these different jobs. We will be tasting different vegetables, sorting healthy and unhealthy foods and discovering how we can be strong like Superworm. We will then enjoy a superhero picnic to celebrate the end of this topic. At the end of the year we will think about what our special qualities are, what we are good at and what we would like to be better at. We will practise one of our skills to perform Beamish has got talent for our Graduation in the last week of school.
Summer 1 2019
This half term we will be learning about things that grow in the ground. Firstly discovering what we need to make that little seed grow. We will plant seeds in our flower garden and make observational drawings of the changes we see. We will create an outdoor garden centre to enable us to understand what tools we need to be a good gardener. Children will learn the story of Jack and the beanstalk and use props to act it out. We will plant beans and watch them grow.
Children will make their own tape measure writing numerals on strips of paper to measure their bean and the giants huge foot prints he leaves in the classroom. Children will explore a range of textured materials to create Oliver’s garden for our small world area We will plant vegetables and enjoy tasting and creating soup with vegetables we have grown. Finally we will create characters with vegetables from the story Supertato and write speech bubbles to help rescue the vegetables trapped by the evil pea.
Spring 2 2019
This half term we are going to be focussing on sounds we hear during celebrations. we will be making pancakes for shrove Tuesday. Dressing up for world book day and focussing on the book ‘Journeys’ as a whole school, comparing interests and learning from the story. We will be engaging in forest school activities, listening for sounds outdoors and creating instruments of our own. We will talk about new life and share photographs of us when we were young and search for new life outdoors. Finally this half term we will enjoy Easter celebrations.

Spring 1 This half term we will be focussing on The famous character in our books. First we need to catch the Naughty elf and use the Storyland map to work out who the stolen presents belong too. Following this we will read stories of the character from Storyland and find out about them. We will act out stories dress up as characters and get into role.
Autumn 2 2018
Autumn 2 This half term we will be focussing on Nursery Rhymes- Posing the question how many rhymes do I know? We will learn a range of rhymes and actions, encouraging children to join in. Activities around rhymes will involve sheep sheering (baa baa Black Sheep) Humpty Dumpty crime scene and tasting arrange of cooked eggs.
This half term we will also be having lots of fun Christmas activities and practise for our nativity “Mary’s Knitting” As a special Christmas treat We will be going to the Metro Centre to visit Santa Claus and take Berry Bear to the Bear Factory to buy him some new clothes.
Autumn 1 2018
Autumn 1 Our focus this half term will be on Settling children into school. Forest school week having lots of fun outdoors exploring the environment for natural objects and creating new things with them. Following this we focus on travel – Posing the question” Why are the wheels on the bus round”? and carry out activities revolving around the story TheNaughty Bus. Other stories we will learn about will be Little Red Riding Hood, Thomas The Tank and The Magic bed.
All of EYFS have had a brilliant time working on our topic, ‘What I want to be when I grow up’. We even had a visit from the Fire Brigade.
This half term we are having a forest school week at the beginning of the term. This will involve learning about different types of weather and how weather affects our environment. Leading on from this we will discuss how things grow and learn about life cycles of animals and plants.
Spring 2 2018
This half term we are learning about celebrations and New Life. We will be tasting Chinese food and performing our own Chinese dance to celebrate Chinese new year. Discussing how special our mums are and making them lovely cards and gifts to celebrate mothers day. We will look at new life celebrating animals being born in the spring and discover which animals hatch from an egg.
We will discuss celebrations we enjoy throughout the year such as birthdays, weddings, christenings etc. A visit from Miss Sharpe with baby Jorgie will enable us to carry out our very own christening .
In the last two weeks of term we will carry out some exciting Easter activities and learn about the Easter Story.

EYFS have been enjoying their weekly library sessions. After listening to a story they all choose a book to take home.
Reception had a great start to Sports Week. They took part in a judo workshop, and had a fantastic time.
This half term we will be reading a book about ‘Superworm’, we will search for worms and make observational drawing and even measure with worm sweets. As it is international week in this half term we will be learning about Egypt, making the Egyptian flag, designing our own Egyptian collars and making pyramids in our sandpit too. Supertato, Super Daisy and Charlie and his Superhero underpants will also help save the day, teaching us to be healthy and strong. We will also find out about real super heroes such as Policemen and Firefighters, to help us to learn about how to keep safe too. Finally we will have a graduation ceremony to celebrate how we are Superheroes too.
This half term we have been learning about mini beasts and lifecycles. Children have enjoyed looking at photos of chicks hatching, and then having a visit from Mrs Dowding with the chicks at only 3 weeks old. Mr Wressell brought in Queenie the turtle, and we looked at patterns on its shell and discussed food chains, because the turtle had eaten all his frogspawn. The children will be taking home their very own caterpillar to watch them grow over the spring holiday. Once they have gone into a cocoon they will be returned to school and released once they turn into butterflies. Parents will be invited to this special occasion.
This half term we are focussing on celebrations. We will make and taste pancakes with different toppings. We will dress up as a book character for world book day and visit Seven Stories on 9th March to take part in a bear exhibition (linked to our previous topic on bears). This half term we will share our personal experiences of celebrations and read the story of Bears Birthday and King and King, looking at wedding celebrations. We will enjoy developing our growing garden, planting seeds and learning about new life. We will make cards and gifts for Mothers Day and take part in Easter celebrations learning about the Easter Story.
EYFS started off the half term celebrating the marriage of ‘King and King’. Everyone loved the story and had a great time planning the ceremony, then acting it out.
